Pale-winged Indigobird, Wilsons IndigobirdNote 1: Most of the finches in Appendix III were listed by Ghana and include some of the commonest birds in Africa. As Ghana was completely within its rights under the Convention to list these birds that are native to its own habitats, other nations are required under the Convention to support the restriction in trade in these species. These birds were listed in 1976, and a quarter of a century of reflection on the damage Ghana has done to the legitimate conservation aims of the Convention has not resulted in the removal of a single finch from this Appendix. In considering that it took our own United States Government over a century to repeal a telephone tax that was passed to finance the Spanish-American war, it is highly unlikely that Ghana will ever remove any of the species it has placed on this listing.
Note 2: The Red-eared Firetail, Emblema oculata, found in Australia, was placed on Appendix II in 1979, but was deleted from the listing in 1987.
