Founded in 1984, the National Finch and Softbill Society (NFSS) endeavors to educate any and all persons in the keeping and breeding of finches and softbills.  As a non-profit organization, NFSS serves aviculturists in all fifty states, as well as Canada, Europe, Australia, and the Far East. We have affiliated  clubs worldwide, are a member of the AFA, and have International Correspondent agreements with several large organizations around the world.

The Society's purpose is to introduce the enjoyment of keeping and breeding finches and softbills through educational programs and society activities. The Society publishes a bi-monthly magazine and supports conservation efforts as well as exhibition of members' birds around the globe.

NFSS cooperates with local and national avicultural organizations in the continual effort to obtain true aviculture preservation.

Why YOU should join the NFSS

The National Finch and Softbill Society, established in 1984, is dedicated to the introduction of the enjoyment of keeping and breeding Finches and Softbills to all interested parties, enhance the knowledge of our members in keeping and care of these birds, encourage breeding programs, and cooperate with organizations for the preservation of aviculture in this country.

What are the Benefits of Joining?

  1. Our bi-monthly Bulletin connects you with other finch and softbill enthusiasts around the country.  It includes articles on diet, breeding, management and the experiences of other aviculturists with various finch and softbill species.  It also includes information on bird shows, bird-related legislation, and a classified section where members can buy, sell or trade birds and/or supplies.

  2. NFSS has a program called "FINCHSAVE".  The goal is establish and maintain all of the finch and softbill species in American aviculture.  All NFSS members are encouraged to enhance the propagation of finch and softbills.

  3. NFSS maintains an annual census by species that helps you connect with other bird breeders for the purpose of exchanging information or breeding stock.

  4. NFSS offers its members various sizes of closed, traceable leg bands, which also provide proof of domesticity.

  5. "Finchshop", the sales division of the NFSS, offers various bird-related items for sale to members.  The profits from from selling these items are then used to support the Society's other programs.

  6. NFSS has an Affiliation program. Your club can affiliate and receive plaques and rosettes as show awards.  Non-show clubs can affiliate and receive service awards for members.  NFSS Classifications are offered to clubs for use in their shows, and speakers are also available, with slide programs that feature finches and softbills. The NFSS appreciates the many bird clubs throughout the US and abroad that do affiliate with the NFSS and demonstrate their support of the only national society dedicated to all finch and softbill species.

  7. NFSS has a Judges Panel, composed of individuals who have completed the NFSS Apprentice Program.  All judge by the NFSS Standard of Judging, are approved by the Board of Directors and are available to local clubs.

  8. NFSS has established Written Standards that can be applied to evaluation of Finches and Softbills for breeding programs as well as the exhibition of species.  We currently have written standards for the Cherry Finch, Cordon Bleu, Diamond Sparrow, Fire Finch, Green Singing Finch, Gouldian, Java Rice Bird, Lavendar Finch, Pekin Robin, Shaftail, Society Finch (Bengalese), and Zebra Finch as well as a General Standard for Finches and Softbills.

  9. NFSS also sponsors a "Championship Exhibitor" award program and a "Championship Bird" program.  Both reward high achievements on the show bench.

  10. Each year NFSS holds a National Show.  All members are encouraged to attend and participate.  An International patronage Exchange brings awards from foreign countries.

Membership information will not be sold or released to a 3rd party
