FinchSave Program
Definition and Purpose:
Long term goal: To have an established consortium of breeders of finches and softbills dedicated to producing and maintaining a viable captive bred population of finches and softbills in the United States.
Short term goal: Consistent breeding success with participating species.
Requirements:
- Participant must be an NFSS member
- Participant must agree to close band chicks with recommended size NFSS bands.
- Participants must agree to complete a brief annual report.
Excluded Birds:
The following finches and softbills will not be accepted into the program:
Zebra Finches, Gouldians, Shafttails, Java Rice Birds, Society (Bengalese) Finches, any hybridized bird. These birds are excluded because of their known availability or questionable genetic purity. The Timor Zebra Finch will be accepted into the program if it can be documented as the distinctly different Timor Variety.
FINCHSAVE will assist participants in the following ways:
- Provide benefits of NFSS membership including free FINCHSAVE ads, informative articles in the NFSS and FINCHSAVE bulletins, and have access to the NFSS census.
- Assist participants by providing information on: Where to obtain birds, NFSS bird bands, maintaining specific species.
- Keep participants informed of program progress through FINCHSAVE's newsletter or NFSS bulletin.
- Recognize participant accomplishments with their species.

NFSS Annual Census
The annual census of the NFSS on the "state of the hobby" is prepared by contributing members with information of numbers of species being bred, housing and clutch information.
