The Zebra Finch (Poephila castanotis) is probably the commonest and most frequently finch in captivity. There are over 30 different color mutations. The sexes are very easy to determine (females have no ear patches) and they can be bred in either single pairs or in a colony (more than 3 pairs).

Zebras require a good quality finch mix and enjoy additional leafy green food. They will often raise their young without further additions to the diet but many breeders supply eggfood and sprouted seeds during the breeding season.
