Found in the dry areas of Australia, usually in flocks of 20 to 40 birds. This is one of the smallest grass finches, being only 3-1/2 to 4 inches long The Owl finch has two color varieties, the nominate white rumped race (the most common in captivity in the U.S.) which is native to Queensland and New South Wales, and the black rumped race from the Northern Territory and northwestern Australia.
